Dual Attention in ADHD: Why Doing Two Things Can Help You Focus
Most of us have been told that multitasking is the enemy of productivity. And in many cases, that’s true — especially when it turns into constant task-switching and distraction.
But for ADHD brains, there’s an important distinction:
Intentional dual attention can improve focus. Unintentional task-switching often disrupts it.
Understanding the difference can change how you work with your brain instead of against it.
What Is Dual Attention?
Dual attention is the practice of pairing a primary task (what you need to focus on) with a secondary, low-effort activity (what helps your brain stay engaged).
It’s not about splitting your attention equally — it’s about supporting your attention system.
For example, this might look like listening in a meeting while doodling, studying while using a fidget, or walking while brainstorming. In these cases, the secondary activity isn’t distracting — it’s regulating.
Why This Helps the ADHD Brain
ADHD brains often need a certain level of stimulation to stay engaged. Without it, attention drifts and the “bored” part of the brain starts looking for something more interesting.
You can think of it like this: one part of your brain is trying to focus, while another part is under-stimulated and restless. If that restless part isn’t occupied, it will create its own stimulation — usually through distraction.
Dual attention gives that part a job. Instead of pulling you away, it helps keep you anchored.
The Difference Between Dual Attention and Task Switching
This is where things often get misunderstood.
Dual attention (helpful):
- planned and intentional
- one primary task stays constant
- the second activity is repetitive or low-effort
- supports focus and regulation
Task switching (unhelpful):
- reactive and unplanned
- jumping between multiple primary tasks
- often driven by boredom or dopamine-seeking
- fragments attention and increases mental fatigue
For example:- doodling during a meeting supports focus, while checking email, texts, and new tabs mid-meeting pulls you out of it.
Why Doodling Actually Helps You Focus
Research shows that light doodling during passive tasks (like listening) can improve attention and retention.
When you’re only listening, especially in low-stimulation environments, your mind is more likely to wander. A simple, repetitive motor activity gives your brain just enough stimulation to stay engaged without pulling focus away from the main task.
It’s not a distraction — it’s anchoring.
The “Bored Brain” Concept
Many people with ADHD describe having a part of their brain that gets bored quickly and starts scanning for stimulation.
That part isn’t the problem — it’s information.
If ignored, it will interrupt, distract, or pull you elsewhere. But when it’s given something simple to do — a fidget, movement, or background input — it settles, and your focus becomes more sustainable.
Examples of Dual Attention in Real Life
This can look different depending on the task and the person.
- listening to meetings or lectures while doodling or using a fidget
- doing repetitive work while listening to music
- walking while thinking or taking calls
- studying while chewing gum or using a sensory object
- folding laundry while reflecting or processing
The key is that the secondary activity stays predictable and low-effort, so it supports — not competes with — your focus.
Therapist Tip
If you’re not sure whether something is helping or distracting, ask:
“Is this keeping me in the task, or pulling me out of it?”
If your attention returns easily, it’s supportive. If you keep drifting, it’s likely turning into task-switching.
A Note on Overdoing It
Not all multitasking is helpful. If both activities require problem-solving, language processing, or decision-making, your brain will struggle to keep up.
Dual attention works best when one task is effortful and the other is regulating.
The Gentle Reframe
You don’t need to force yourself into single-task focus if that’s not how your brain works best.
Sometimes the path to better focus isn’t doing less — it’s adding the right kind of support.
That restless, bored part of your brain isn’t sabotaging you — it’s asking for stimulation. When you meet that need intentionally, focus becomes more sustainable, less effortful, and less dependent on willpower.
You’re not bad at focusing. You just need to focus differently.
