Laura Thompson, LMHC
Beginning your search for a therapist can be a daunting task. I recognize that it takes immense strength and courage to begin your journey of therapy and I commend you for being here. Is your child struggling with expressing themselves? Are you entering a new phase of your life? Are you struggling with symptoms of anxiety, grief, or depression? I am here to help. I am here to provide a safe and nurturing environment to actively listen and collaboratively develop an approach together to achieve the peace and happiness you deserve.
We all face hardships at some point in our lives and I aim to be a sounding board to empower you to be your own facilitator to your journey of healing and growth.
My name is Laura Thompson and I hope to bring healing to those going through a difficult time in their life. I am happy to have you here and would like to begin by sharing a little about myself. I reside here in Florida with my wonderful partner and my lovely six year old daughter. I began my mental health career by working for the United States Army in the field of Medical Research. During that time, I assisted in research for PTSD. After earning my Master’s Degree in Counselor Education from McDaniel College in Westminster, MD, I worked in the field of substance abuse providing therapy to individuals with dual-diagnoses. After working in the field of substance abuse, I moved to Florida and began my work with children. I was a child and family therapist for children in the foster care system and during this time, I learned that working with children and families is a true passion of mine. While I enjoyed my time in that position, I was incredibly lucky to find Helping Moon and have been blessed to be part of this great team ever since!
I enjoy working with children, teens, adults, and couples. Is your child having trouble regulating their emotions and finding the words to express how they are feeling? I can help. Many times, our children are feeling big emotions and I will aim to provide a safe and nurturing environment to help them identify those emotions and learn appropriate ways to express them. Are you having parenting struggles? I can help. I am trained, certified, and have years’ experience in Positive Parenting Practices (Triple P) and will aim to empower you to confidently manage your children’s behavior. Are you suffering from symptoms of anxiety or depression? Have you endured trauma? I can help. I believe that each and every one of us are equipped with the skills needed to put us on the path of resilience and together we will discover what your path looks like.
My therapeutic approach stems from many different theories. I utilize Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT), Play Therapy, Motivational Interviewing, and Triple P (Positive Parenting Practices) in my work with my clients. My approach begins by providing a safe and nurturing environment to listen without judgement and to listen so that you feel your voice is heard and valued. We will then will explore the clarity you are seeking in therapy and develop a treatment plan specific to your needs.
I place value in a holistic approach and believe that the mind, body, and spirit are all interconnected and will work to empower you to find the right fit balance for YOU!
One of my favorite quotes is “The quality of your life depends upon the quality of your thoughts” (by Marcus Aurelius) and I look forward to supporting you to finding your ultimate quality of life!
