One of my favorite quotes is “You don’t have to be positive all the time. It’s perfectly okay to feel sad, angry, annoyed, frustrated, scared and anxious. Having feelings doesn’t make you a negative person. It makes you human.” — Lori Deschene.
The first time I read this quote was on the wall of my own therapist’s office. Making the decision to look for help, can be a difficult one. It takes a lot of courage to acknowledge that you may need a co-pilot on your mental health journey. As a student intern and future counselor, I want to thank you for allowing myself and Helping Moon Counseling to be a part of your journey.
Hello, my name is Sandra Kroitor, and I am so excited and honored to be a student intern with Helping Moon Counseling. I began my journey into the helping professions when I graduated from the University of Central Florida with a Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education in 2010 and began my thirteen-and-a-half-year career. Two years into my teaching career, I was offered the opportunity to earn my master’s in education from the University of Central Florida. Now, all these years later I am proud to say that I will be completing my second master’s degree in clinical mental health counseling from Barry University.
It is important to remember that seeking out therapy takes an act of courage, self-love, and a determination to be the best you possible. Others may choose to criticize your choice, but please remember that you are not here for them, but for yourself. It is OK to choose you. It is OK to want better for you. It is OK to put yourself first. There are going to be times where you will be sad, mad, confused, frustrated, and even scared, but please remember that I will be there with you. There will also be times where you will be excited, giddy, encouraged, and elated, and at those moments I will celebrate with you.
The journey we are about to take can be both difficult and enjoyable all at the same time. As a therapist, I welcome opposing ideas and see them as progress in your work. I encourage you to bring your most authentic self to sessions. If you are not sure of who that is, then we can work on that together. I encourage you to be one with your feelings, cry, scream, laugh…they all just prove you are human, and that is a wonderful thing. Thank you for allowing me to be a part of your journey. It is my hope that you come through this with a new sense of self-appreciation, self-love, and renewed hope.
