Supporting LGBTQ
A Time for Celebration—and Compassion
Pride Month is a celebration of identity, authenticity, and love. It’s a time when many in the LGBTQ+ community come together in visibility and joy. While the rainbow flags wave and the parades march on, not everyone is able to step fully into the light.
For many, Pride Month is also a reminder of the emotional labor it takes to simply exist in a world that isn’t always safe or supportive. Mental health challenges -including anxiety, depression, and trauma - are more prevalent in LGBTQ+ populations, especially among youth and BIPOC (black, indigenous and people of color) individuals. And access to affirming mental health care is often limited.
Why Mental Health Support Matters
Studies consistently show that LGBTQ+ individuals face higher rates of mental health challenges due to systemic discrimination, rejection, and minority stress. These challenges are compounded by a lack of culturally competent providers and affordable care.
That’s why Pride Month isn’t just about celebration - it’s also about showing up. If you're an ally, a friend, a loved one, or part of the community yourself, now is a powerful time to extend compassion and support.
Small Acts, Big Impact: Ways to Support LGBTQ+ Mental Health
You don’t have to be a therapist to help. Sometimes, the most meaningful support looks like:
- Holding space for someone to talk about their gender identity or sexual orientation without judgment.
- Offering to accompany a friend to a medical or therapy appointment. Helping navigate resources, such as looking up LGBTQ-affirming therapists or support groups.
- Simply checking in, especially with those who may feel isolated or are still closeted.
A little handholding can go a long way.
More Ways to Show Up This Pride Month
- Support LGBTQ+ Charities and Mutual Aid Funds Whether it’s financial donations or volunteering your time, supporting local and national LGBTQ+ organizations strengthens community care.
- Attend or Share Online EventsNot everyone can join in-person events. Fortunately, many panels, film screenings, and workshops are available online - perfect for learning and connecting from anywhere.
- Shop from LGBTQ-Owned Businesses Economic support matters. Seek out queer artists, makers, service providers, and local entrepreneurs to help uplift community voices.
- Educate Yourself and Others Read books by queer authors, share thoughtful content, and engage in conversations that challenge harmful stereotypes. Knowledge-sharing is one of the most powerful tools we have.
Pride is Protest, Pride is Healing
At its core, Pride began as a protest led by trans women of color. Today, it's both a celebration and a continued call to action - for equity, safety, and mental well-being for all.
Let this month be a reminder that showing up for LGBTQ+ mental health doesn’t have to be loud. It can be quiet, consistent, and rooted in care. Whether you are part of the community or a beloved ally, you have the power to help someone feel seen, safe, and supported.
